Manjhi was motivated to undertake this extraordinary task after his wife died due to a lack of medical care. The nearest hospital was on the other side of the mountain, and the journey to it was very long and arduous, as there was no direct route through the mountain.
Manjhi began his work in 1960 and worked for 22 years, chiseling and carving a path through the mountain, which was 300 feet long and 30 feet wide. He worked alone, without any help from machines, and used only hand tools to break through the rocks and stones.
Manjhi's work was extremely difficult, and he often had to work for long hours under challenging conditions. He faced ridicule and opposition from some villagers who thought he was wasting his time and resources.
Despite these challenges, Manjhi was determined to complete his mission, and he eventually succeeded in carving the path through the mountain. The path reduced the distance to the nearest hospital from 75 kilometers to just one kilometer, and it also improved access to education and markets for the villagers.
Today, Manjhi's achievement is celebrated as a symbol of human determination and perseverance. A movie about his life, "Manjhi: The Mountain Man," was released in 2015, and his legacy continues to inspire people around the world.
