How many forests are there in Nepal?

Nepal is a country that is home to many forests, with a diverse range of plant and animal species. The exact number of forests in Nepal is difficult to determine, as there are different ways to define and classify forests. However, according to the Department of Forests and Soil Conservation in Nepal, there are a total of 118 forest types in the country, which can be broadly categorized into six main types:

  1. Tropical and subtropical forests
  2. Subtropical broadleaved hill forests
  3. Temperate broadleaved hill forests
  4. Subalpine coniferous forests
  5. Alpine scrub and grasslands
  6. Riverine forests

These forests cover approximately 44% of the land area in Nepal, and they provide important ecological, social, and economic benefits to the country, including timber and non-timber forest products, as well as ecosystem services such as water regulation and soil conservation.
